THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE? IDI AMIN MAMA SAMIA SULUHU RIGS ELECTION IN TANZANIA

Tanzania's General Election Marred by Controversy and Violence;Claims has it that 700 plus people were killed!

Tanzania's recent general election, held on October 29, 2025, has been widely criticized for lacking freedom and fairness. The election, which saw President Samia Suluhu Hassan win a landslide victory with 97.66% of the vote, was marred by allegations of irregularities, repression, and violence.

Election Irregularities and Suppression of Opposition

The election was criticized for the exclusion of major opposition figures, including Tundu Lissu of the Chadema party, who was barred from contesting due to treason charges. Another opposition leader, Luhaga Mpina of ACT-Wazalendo, was also disqualified on technical grounds. These exclusions led to widespread protests, which were met with force by security personnel.

Violence and Human Rights Abuses

The protests, which erupted in several cities, including Dar es Salaam, were marked by violence, with reports of police using tear gas and live ammunition to disperse demonstrators. According to human rights groups, at least 10 people were killed, while the opposition party Chadema claimed that hundreds were killed. The government, however, dismissed the opposition's death toll as "hugely exaggerated"

Restrictions on Freedom of Expression

The government imposed a nationwide curfew and restricted internet access, making it difficult for citizens to communicate and access information. The internet shutdown was widely condemned, with the UN human rights office urging authorities to promptly reinstate internet service and facilitate citizens' full enjoyment of their rights to freedom of expression.

International Reaction

The international community has expressed concern over the election's legitimacy, with the United Nations Secretary-General calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of excessive force used against protesters. The African Union and other regional bodies have also raised concerns about the electoral process .

What's Next for Tanzania?

The aftermath of the election has deepened political polarization in Tanzania, with the opposition rejecting the results and calling for reforms. The government's response to the protests and allegations of human rights abuses will be crucial in determining the country's future stability and democratic progress. As the situation unfolds, it is essential for the international community to continue calling for transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in Tanzania .
